I shan't lie to you, when I first read about the return of 3D to gaming, last year, I was skeptical, very skeptical.
It seemed very much a move back wards. I've not bought into the 3D movies scene, I've not seen a single one it 3d, however I did get the chance to play Avatar in 3D at Eurogamer 2009.
I wasn't impressed, I was expecting what I would call full 3d, like when I use my eyes in real life to look at things. Instead what I saw was a layered 3d, several things were a level from the screen, some another level further forward. I am naturally hard to impress (although easily excited), and I was not blown away.
So, when the 3DS was announced I was nothing more than the eyebrow raising level of intrigued, we all remember the Virtual Boy (I do not remember the virtual boy), and it's great successes. The market was not ready, and I feel that although we are in a better place, it certainly isn't time for everything to be flung way ahead of itself.
That said, I respect that Nintendo have stated that the 3DS works in layers, they've always been a very honest company, and I think many gamers have a great respect for them through that. And the line up for the console is fantastic, Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, Dj Hero, Saint's Row - truly a line up to try and entirely capture the handheld market.
I however, don't understand the need for all this to be in 3D. They could simply have brought out another console, called it the ADS due to it's analog pad, kept the upscaled graphics and held the same launch titles and it would have still blown people away.
I think the sudden move to 3D is unnecessary, with technology advancing as it has (See, Kinect and the Microsoft surface) we are not far from a Minority Report style interface, and to boot with Japan's technology level we are not far from Holographic televisions that will give a false layer of depth without the need for glasses or the 3D gimmick.
I just can't feel the love for 3D, I understand with Sony among others backing it wholly it may just make it, I just can't see the magic.
Sincerely,
A hater.
