Folllowing on from the news blog just uploaded, this thread's for letting us know your favorite AI/NPC character over the years.
I'm going to start on a bit of a tangent - never a good idea - and tell you about an experience on a game (based off my favorite movie), The Thing.
The Thing was, by all measures, a fairly plain game. The unique factor however was the inclusion of the star doppleganger, and the fact that the companions that join you can - of course - be 'infected' and turn at almost any moment.
Much like in the movie they would only turn when they outnumbered you, so, as at sometimes you could have three people following you, this was highly suspensful.
However, as I really enjoyed the idea, and anything to do with "The Thing" I replayed, again and again. Very quickly I learnt, to my disapointment, that ALL of the AI companions had what I called "Turn Points" at which, even if they were not infected when you checked them two seconds earlier, they would turn into "Things".
This annoyed me, I had deliberately used valuble, rare items and ammo to test them, keep them alive so they could 1) help me and 2) not die, and then they bloody-well turn on me anyway. Bawls.
I noticed it first with a companion called Pace, a nervous soldier with a heavy South American drawl, who was out in a snowstorm, heavily paniced. The first time I played he actually killed himself with fear, the second and third time he turned at the same point. I saved on the fourth play through, tested him : clear, then watched, annoyed, as he turned and attacked me.
Anyway, back to my favourite companion, while Ogrehn from Dragon Age would have it normally, I just remembered the existance of Yoshimo from Baldur's Gate 2 (PC), who was absolutely awesome, and very useful for I kept playing a ranger class character.
Alternately, I'm gonna be a bit mainstream and pick Vincent from FF7, he was a pretty awesome character with very unique Limit Breaks, who tied into the story (albeit loosely) and best of all, was optional, so some people didn't even get him as a friggin' party member.
So come on mortals, who was your favorite (Non-protagonist, Non-antagonist) game character?
