So, come on people, let's get this forum started.
Mine would be pretty close between many, but I think Earthbound sticks out by a nose, such a great game, and very forward for it's time w/ it's modern setting. I don't think anything has delivered such a consistent high-quality throughout the game either, I was literally hooked, and am anytime I start replaying.
The SNES was also the perfect time for it, no other home console format had that soft, colourful appeal to the majority of it's games. My main memories of NES were Maniac Mansion, N64 was Goldeneye and Gamecube w/ Eternal Darkness.
Earthbound's popularity was clearly not just restricted to myself, it's a cult classic, with petitions for Ninty to put it on the WiiShop channel as a download, Ness becoming a regular in the Smash Bro's series and people having spent months chipping away at translating Mother 2 into English for us unlucky Westerners.
Earthbound was mind-blowing, and I highly recommend anyone who even thinks themselves a SLIGHT RPG fan getting an emulator and rommin' it (for no more than 24 hours of course) to death.
So come on people, a sincere fav. game, and a few paragraphs on it.

I don't really know what to say is my personal all time best game ever. It is so difficult to decide because there are so many games that I have enjoyed playing.
It is somewhat easier to pin point the earliest games that I can remember playing and enjoying. The games that shaped my early life and made me into the gamer you see today.
The first game that I can vividly remember playing was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Megadrive. I can remember the television was set up in the spare room of the house, and the joy of getting to the last level, I remember pausing the game because I wanted to tell my Dad when he came in from work, and there was no other way to save it.

Eh.. Bioshock possibly or The Sims 2... I dont really play that many games these days but when I do its something that doesnt require alot of brain power (ie Left 4 Dead, Bejeweled etc) but on occasion I do manage to find some time to sit down and attempt to do something with a game which winds up being create new character, run out of time, go to bed!
so.. yah... between the two above.. Ive played through Bioshock twice and im playing through Bioshock 2 for the second time just to find the diaries as I never find them all in the first playthrough..
The Sims 2 I am on generation 5 I think.. I can't remember and since someone moved all the files for it ive both lost the family and the will to play it again.. something about putting so much time into something only to have it lost is rather frustrating and off putting to go back to attempting to do it again..

Dude you can go old skool if you want but everyone knows that the old games are just that.......... old, they dont hold up. My best game in recent years will have to be Assassins Creed 2. It fixed all the flaws from the first outing but kept all the good stuff as well as telling a great story.
Assassin's Creed 2, best of the best.

Zo!
No. No. No.
It is All about the old skool. Without great games like Baldur's gate 2, Alex Kidd, Bonanza Bros, FF7, Super Mario World, Earthbound, Cannon Fodder, Ultima to name a few, without games like this gamers would never have clung to games like they did, we'd not be here now if it wasn't for the great success of classics like those.
In this day, with a serious lack of fresh IPs, I can understand how you can cling to one of the strongest (Non including Arcade downloads) of these, but you've got to remember back to the old skool, to the games that gave you a real taste.
Not so much your first game, but the game that you chose, and subsequently that chose you.
I'll accept your AC2 answer however, it does seem to have done damn well, especially considering that AC started getting some serious slating after the initial 'WOW' of the graphics wore off.

I have heard of that, I think our mutual buddy Mike was trying to explain the series to me. I heard the battle system was a bit different for the time. That's about all I remember. Gamecube brought me Eternal Darkness, that game blew my mind, such a great game, very unique. Very... Cthulu.

BALDUR'S GATE 2. I remember playing this... I love Boo and Minsc. Great reference in Mass Effect 2 to the miniature giant space hamster! BG2 was a classic, instant classic. It was Bioware through and through. It was also the first game where, for some reason, I felt the need to stockpile small shiny things. I've had that ever since, whenever there are Gems, Rocks or small items that serve no use bar being sold for value (Read : Pokemon, Nuggets), I simply collect them rather than trading them. For a rainy day, I would imagine.

No it's all about the game that stole my life for atleast a month and that is Viva PiƱata. Oh yes people the coulours and simplicity. It's all boring at the start for about a hour but after that gets interesting and subsequently alot harder it's a easy game to get addicted to.
